On Thursday, November 13th, the Seventh Grade Theatre Arts students illuminated the Paterakis Athletic Center with an unforgettable evening of creativity and confidence. Guided by Ms. Nan Kaestner, the performance blended music, movement, and drama into a vibrant celebration of learning and leadership. From beloved classics like Oklahoma and The Sound of Music to a preview of Elf, each act reflected the poise, collaboration, and joy that define the Gerstell experience. Audience participation added an extra spark, reminding us that education thrives when curiosity and courage take center stage.
Gerstell Academy Upper School students showcased their leadership and public speaking skills during the annual Poetry Out Loud competition on Thursday, November 13. Held in the boardroom of Robert E. Smith Hall, student participants memorized and recited selected poems from the national anthology, connecting deeply with literary heritage while preparing for state and national-level competition.
Gerstell Academy celebrated its annual Veterans’ Day Assembly on November 11, led by the eighth grade—a tradition since 2007. The day featured a flag-raising ceremony, heartfelt performances, and stories from veterans, with highlights including the Fallen Man Table presentation by alumnus Brett McLaughlin ’14 and recognition of alumni in service. Veteran of the Year, Todd Lutton, was honored with a Quilts of Valor presentation, as students, faculty, families, and veterans from multiple generations came together to reflect on sacrifice and reinforce Gerstell’s values of leadership, gratitude, and unity.
Our youngest Falcons reflected on the values of Leadership, Honor, and Courage during a special Pre-K and Kindergarten Leadership Circle. Guest speaker Mrs. Myers—mother of Pre-K student Raquela and member of the Maryland State Police—shared how her military experience shaped her perseverance and leadership.
Mr. Todd C. Lutton, husband of Gerstell Academy faculty member, Mrs. Patty Lutton was named Gerstell Academy Veteran of the Year during the annual Veteran’s Day ceremony. On Tuesday, November 11th, the Gerstell Academy community gathered to honor and celebrate veterans for their commitment, courage, and sacrifice for our country.
On Friday, November 7, the officers of Falcon Outreach visited the Ronald McDonald House of Maryland to present a check for $5,544 and over 250 handmade cards from the Pediatric Cancer Awareness fundraiser. Students also received a tour of the facility, which supports children receiving medical care at local hospitals.
Gerstell Academy’s Current Events Club welcomed Russian dissident Ms. Janna Blanter to speak with Upper School students about her firsthand experiences under Soviet rule and the importance of freedom, democracy, and human rights.

Representing 16 of 25 entries, their innovative projects highlighted sustainability and environmental awareness, inspiring future collaborations and reinforcing their role as changemakers for a greener world.
Gerstell Academy proudly announces that fifth-grade student Devin Hardiman has been named the Elementary Visual Arts Winner in the Maryland Foreign Language Association (MFLA) Visual Arts Contest. Devin’s artwork, created last April in Ms. Patty Lutton’s fourth-grade Spanish class, beautifully illustrated the theme “Why is learning another language so important?” His vibrant design—featuring people united by international flags—earned first place in the statewide competition. Devin’s message: “Being able to speak different languages brings us together,” reflects the global perspective nurtured in Gerstell’s language programs. Congratulations, Devin!
Our second graders brought their earth science curriculum to life through an immersive visit to Crystal Grottoes Caverns, where they observed remarkable cave formations and gained a deeper appreciation for environmental stewardship. Their exploration continued at South Mountain Creamery, where they connected scientific concepts to agriculture by engaging with farm animals and learning about milk pasteurization. The day concluded with fresh ice cream and meaningful reflections on leadership and character.
In a bold step toward cultivating thoughtful, respectful leaders, Gerstell Academy’s 11th grade Applied Ethics class is piloting the use of an innovative AI tool in the classroom - SWAYbeta.ai - to sharpen students’ civil discourse and critical thinking skills.
Gerstell Academy celebrates academic excellence through several honor societies. NHS recognizes scholarship, leadership, service, and character, requiring a 3.6 GPA; 15 students joined this year. Other societies honor achievements in Spanish, math, social studies, music, science, and English, each with unique criteria and opportunities for growth.
Today, Gerstell Academy welcomed back Anthony Carpenter ’19 to the Deborah Paterakis Gymnasium, where he once made history as a standout basketball player. Known for his record-breaking shooting accuracy, over 1,000 career points, and two MIAA Conference Championship titles, Anthony returned not as a player—but as a collegiate coach.
Our 4th grade students set sail on the Lady Maryland for a hands-on Chesapeake Bay adventure, exploring science and environmental stewardship through activities like steering the ship, testing water salinity, and studying marine life. They witnessed the effects of pollution firsthand and discussed the unusual pistachio tide’s impact on ecosystems. A surprise encounter with the Pride of Baltimore II added excitement, as students exchanged cannon salutes and escorted the ship into the harbor. Inspired by innovations like Mr. Trash Wheel and reef balls, students are now designing their own inventions to help protect the Bay, which they’ll proudly present at October’s Leadership Circle.
This past Friday, the Gerstell Academy Varsity Boys Soccer team volunteered with the Freedom Optimist Shooting Stars program, supporting young athletes with special needs. Through mentorship, teamwork, and shared love for the game, our players embodied the values of leadership, compassion, and community service.
Gerstell Academy is pleased to recognize Jalen, a distinguished student, for his outstanding achievement as a member of the Robo-Lions (FRC Team 2199). Jalen and his team recently earned first place in a highly competitive regional engineering competition hosted by FIRST Chesapeake and the Baltimore Orioles.
Upper School students spent the day at First Fruits Farm, Inc., helping harvest, sort, and box fresh food for local families in need. This service experience allowed students to work together, demonstrate leadership in action, and put Gerstell’s mission of service into practice.
Freshman Rylee Willis represented the United States at the International Baton Twirling Championships in Torino, Italy, earning a bronze medal with the USA Team. Adding to her state, regional, and national titles, Gerstell Academy proudly celebrates her remarkable achievement.
Three of Gerstell Academy’s Girls Varsity Basketball standouts have earned national recognition for their excellence on and off the court. Kiara Hardy, Abby Redman, and Shyla Borek were named Second Team Academic All-Americans by the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA), recognizing their exceptional leadership, academic excellence, and outstanding athletic achievements. Their accomplishments reflect the core values of Gerstell’s leadership-based athletic program.
Summer is heating up at Gerstell, where campers from across the area are making new friends, learning exciting new skills, and soaking up the fun! From Lacrosse Camp and Soccer Camp to Lego Camp, Art Camp and Academic Success Camp, students of all ages are diving into enriching experiences designed to inspire and challenge.
Students from the National English Honor Society took a deep dive into Shakespeare’s world during a visit to the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. From watching a play inspired by Hamlet to exploring interactive exhibits, they gained valuable insights into the Bard’s enduring legacy.
