Rho Kappa Travels to Annapolis

Our students were also able to see the incredibly lifelike statues of both Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, two pivotal figures in our nation’s history, which were installed in the House chamber in 2020.  Students were able to sit in on the Senate gallery and observe the opening proceedings of a typical day in the Maryland Senate. Students were introduced and recognized in the Senate!  Senator Chris West, who represents the district in which Gerstell resides, gave students a “shout out” from the Senate floor and personally came out to greet them after they left the chamber.

They also enjoyed a walking tour of Annapolis. During the tours of the State House, which is the oldest US state capitol in continuous legislative use, the 27 students were afforded the opportunity to visit the original House and Senate chambers, as well as the exact spot where George Washington resigned his military commission.  Additionally, students were able to see the original, handwritten copy of Washington’s resignation.

During their day in Annapolis, students were able to meet up with senior Rho Kappa member Nathan Pokov, who was serving his second week as a Student Page in the Maryland General Assembly.  Nathan was able to share his experiences with the group before heading back to the House of Delegates chamber to continue his page duties.

This authentic leadership experience enabled students to learn firsthand about the significance and importance of Maryland history and its government.  Hayden Hoffman, President of Rho Kappa, commented, “students had a unique opportunity to view the inner workings of our state’s legislature and learn about state history.”
