Gerstell Senior Receives National Recognition, Scholarship for Spanish Achievements

Nathan’s understanding and use of the Gerstell Leadership Model empowered him to approach the extensive application process for this highly competitive award throughout the first semester. Nathan submitted a two-page persuasive essay in Spanish based on the following prompt: “As a 21st century citizen, explain in what way you might use what you have learned in your Spanish classes to be a better global citizen and to contribute to your community.” He also submitted a five-minute video in Spanish in which he discussed his motivation for continuing to study Spanish.

While at Gerstell, Nathan has received state and national recognition for his accomplishments. He has won both silver and bronze medals on the National Spanish Exam (NSE). As a sophomore, he earned the Global Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish and English, Level 1- Functional Fluency and last year he received Level 2- Working fluency. The Spanish Department named him the recipient of the Esther and Dr. Henry Smith Spanish Award in the spring of 2023.

Gaining working fluency in Spanish has literally paid off for a senior at Gerstell Academy. Nathan Pokov has earned one of the twelve $2,000 Joseph A. Adams Senior Scholarships offered to senior members of la Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH- National Spanish Honor Society) the United States. In fact, his award is just one of two offered in the mid-Atlantic and northeast region. One senior member from each chapter in the country may apply for this college scholarship.

Nathan has demonstrated leadership in the Gerstell Academy chapter of the SHH since his sophomore year. As current co-president of the SHH, Nathan inspires and instructs others. Nathan will continue to study Spanish at Haverford College next year. Congratulations to Nathan and his Spanish teacher Sr. Jeffrey Taggart!
