Gerstell Academy Celebrates Black History Month!

The assembly was led by Middle School students and the Visual and Performing Arts departments.  The hour-long presentation was emceed by an 8th grade student. The event featured an eye-catching baton twirling performance from one of our lower school students who has earned national recognition for her talent. Lower school students performed the song “We are the World” while Upper School students presented poems and works of art from black poets and artists throughout history.

This year’s theme focused on the study of African American Life and History in the Arts. Special guest speaker, Ms. Cornelia Brown, grandmother of one of our middle school students, shared her love of textile arts with the audience. With over 30 years of experience in the art of quilt making, she has been a member of the African American Quilters of Baltimore, the International Machine Quilters of America, and the American Quilting Society. Ms. Brown spoke about the history of African American quilting and displayed several quilts she has made over the years.

This inspiring assembly brought the Gerstell community together to pay homage to African Americans and their creative contributions to the arts throughout history.
