Charity Basketball Game - Girl's Varsity Basketball vs. Garrison Forest
On Friday, January 12th, the varsity girls’ basketball team hosted Garrison Forest for an IAAM (Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland) game. This match was more than just a conference game, as the Falcons selected this event as an opportunity to impact our community by creating a breast cancer awareness charity game. Led by captain Kate Roberts, the Falcons used their time, talents, and treasures to plan and fundraise for the cause, working tirelessly for months. The team selected to raise money for breast cancer awareness, donating all profits from the event to The Embrace Fund through Carroll Hospital. Dr. Dona Hobart, Gerstell Academy alumni parent (Ajaya ‘23), acting as the representative for the fund, intends to host an assembly with the student body about breast cancer and why the cause is in need of support.
Prior to the charity game, the team partnered with Believe Big, a nonprofit organization whose sole goal is to help support and encourage cancer patients as they go through this journey. The Falcons took part in the Believe Big mug-making activity where groups can purchase and design mugs for patients going through cancer treatments. These mugs are then delivered by Believe Big to patients with the hope of raising spirits and sharing positivity as they navigate through the adversity of cancer. The Believe Big organization was co-founded by alumni parent Mrs. Ivelisse Page (Jimmy ‘13, Jacob ‘15, John ‘18) and Mrs. Jenni Gardner, also an alumni parent (Maddie ‘14, Jake ‘16, Luke ‘16) is the Believe Mug Program Manager.

Fundraising efforts were completed in a handful of ways, including the sale of pink t-shirts donated by Wallace Consulting and Construction, the sale of concessions, admissions charged for the game, and the sale of raffle tickets for six beautiful baskets donated by members of the school community. The Girls Varsity Basketball team also made a monetary donation from their annual team fundraiser. Gerstell’s Student Government Association collaborated on the event, incorporating fundraising into their charity week drive. Through all these efforts, the Falcons raised nearly $3,000 which will all be donated to the Embrace Fund at Caroll Hospital Center.
