Gerstell Graduate Marcell Luckie ’21 Commissioned as U.S. Navy Officer

A graduate of the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Marcell earned his bachelor’s degree and completed the requirements necessary to receive a commission. During the ceremony, family members participated in the time-honored tradition of pinning on the new officer's insignia, symbolizing the beginning of a distinguished naval career. 

Several speakers recognized the hard work and perseverance required to earn a commission. They noted that becoming a Navy officer demands academic excellence, leadership ability, strong character, and a willingness to serve others before oneself.  Marcell has strived for these personal characteristics, not only in his academic and Navy training, but as a member of the Boy Scouts, where he, along with his two brothers all earned the rank of Eagle Scout. 

Among those in attendance at the commissioning were members of Marcell’s family, friends, classmates, community leaders, and military personnel. Coach Josh Devers from Gerstell Academy completed the first salute with Marcell.  The event served not only as a celebration of personal achievement but also as a tribute to the values of service, honor, courage, and commitment that define naval leadership. 

The commissioning represents both the achievement of a lifelong goal and the beginning of a journey dedicated to leadership, service, and the defense of the nation. The Gerstell community joins in wishing success for Marcell’s next chapter in Navy aviation training in Pensacola, Florida.
