From Caverns to Creamery: Second Graders Dive into Earth Science with an Unforgettable Fall Field Study
Inside the caverns, students witnessed how nature creates formations one drop of water at a time. A particularly powerful moment occurred when the guide pointed out a formation that had stopped growing due to human contact—an impactful reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship and respecting Earth’s delicate systems.
Students also explored columns—where stalactites and stalagmites meet—and were invited to touch “Mondo the Giant,” the only column accessible to visitors. Between cave tours, they enjoyed a peaceful nature walk along a stream, observing local flora and fauna while taking in the crisp fall air.
The adventure continued at South Mountain Creamery, where students enjoyed a picnic lunch and playground time before beginning their farm tour. They met Miniature Highland cows, gently petted baby calves, and even witnessed the birth of one that very day. Through hands-on learning, students discovered how milk is collected, pasteurized, and made safe to drink—connecting classroom lessons on states of matter and biology to real-world agricultural practices.
This field trip exemplified Gerstell Academy’s commitment to experiential learning, allowing students to explore, question, and deepen their understanding of Earth’s features, living things, and scientific processes. Our curious young scientists returned inspired, full of stories—and maybe just a little sticky from their ice cream!
