Former Upper School Basketball Star Now Leading the Charge as College Coach
Anthony Carpenter ’19, returned to the Deborah Paterakis Gymnasium today to speak with the Upper School students. Anthony, once a household name in Gerstellbasketball circles, is now making waves from the sidelines as a collegiate coach. Known for his record-breaking shooting accuracy, surpassing 1,000 points, holding the school points record for about 5 years, and two MIAA Conference Championship titles during his high school career, Carpenter’s journey through the sport has come full circle.
Anthony was able to speak to the students about his passion for basketball, handling adversity, challenges, and the transition of moving to the collegiate level. Playing in the prestigious CIAA conference, Anthony earned multiple accolades as well in the collegiate career, including making the top 15 in assists in the history of Bowie’s basketball program.
After a successful run at the collegiate level as a player at Bowie State University, where he continued to impress with his leadership and precision on the court, Anthony transitioned into coaching—a natural progression given his lifelong passion for basketball. However, he did make the difficult decision of passing up several offers to play professionally internationally. Coaching gives Anthony an opportunity to pass that love on and mentor young athletes both on and off the court.
Now in his second season as assistant coach, Anthony has been given multiple responsibilities of recruiting, scouting other teams, reviewing film, and working directly with the defense. With his deep understanding of the game and unwavering commitment, he’s poised to become one of the standout coaches in college basketball. We are grateful that Anthony shared his time with the students, and we look forward to watching his successful coaching career.
