Gerstell Academy Presents All School Robotics Expo

Students worked on an engineering challenge to design and build a robot using principles of mechanical design and programming. They learned many valuable skills including working together as a team, presenting in front of a group, and overcoming challenges they faced through the season. Lower school students rotated between 5 different stations and enjoyed catching balls thrown by the upper school robot.

The theme for the year is “Unearthed,” and the work focused on collaborating with others to “unearth new findings about ourselves and our collective communities to help build a better world”. The theme is developed each year by FIRST, (a worldwide Robotics community focused on preparing young people for the future). This program inspires young people to experiment and grow their confidence, critical thinking and design skills through hands on learning.

Ms. Megan Jothen, Director of Instructional Technology and Robotics, chaired the event with support from Ms. Nicole Pugh, Lead Robotics Coach for Lower School, Ms. Nicole Holland, Lower School Robotics Coach, and Volunteer Parent Coaches Ms. Alex Jones and Ms. Jamie Atencio.

Ms. Jothen commented that she “enjoys the collaboration between the lower, middle and upper school students as they interact, and is hopeful that our lower and middle school students will be inspired by the upper school student leaders in robotics to continue their journey.”
