Legendary Faculty Member Retires after 18 Years of Service

Mr. Stephen Olszewski has been a beloved and respected member of Gerstell Academy since 2004. He came to Gerstell with a wealth of experience in the field of clinical social work and education. He also served 8 years as a police officer and detective in Baltimore City where he received multiple commendations for his service.
During his tenure at Gerstell Academy, "Mr. O." has served as the Head of Middle School (2004-2007), Chair of the History Department, and full-time History Teacher (2007-2021). For the past year, he took on the role of our first Dean of Faculty. Mr. O. continues to inspire our community with his unwavering dedication to his craft and significant, meaningful, and lasting positive impact on our students, alumni, and entire school community. In total, Mr. O. has spent over 47 years dedicated to the treatment, protection, and education of children.
When asked about the effect Mr. Olszewski has made on the lives of our students, a few of our alumni had this to say:
"Mr. O. taught us more than just history. He taught us how to treat people with respect. He taught us that we are capable of more than we think we are. Every educator, mentor, and coach should strive to make the same level of impact as Mr. O.” - Hannah Seeley ‘16 -
“He is someone who has touched my life in so many ways, even throughout my college experience and now into my career. I still strive today to achieve that level of thorough excellence and personal humility that he exemplified for us every day.” - Ryan Pettine ‘16 -
After 18 years of dedication to Gerstell Academy, Mr. Olszewki has announced his retirement. He is looking forward to spending more time with his wife Kathleen and extended family, including their first grandchild who is due to arrive in June!

Mr. O.’s passion for supporting our Leadership Mission, building a culture of outstanding interdisciplinary education, passion for his students and colleagues, love of Gerstell, and infectious spirit will never be forgotten.
We enthusiastically thank Mr. Olszewski for all that he has given, and wish him well as he enters a new chapter in his incredible life!
