Coach Poklemba Leads with Passion and Conviction

Mr. Cap Poklemba, Physical Education Instructor and Head Varsity Baseball Coach, has been a member of our Gerstell Academy family for over 15 years. He served as the Director of Athletics for thirteen years and grew the athletic programs from one athletic team in 2004 to twenty-three athletic teams when he stepped down to return to his love of teaching and coaching in 2017.
Mr. Poklemba was a standout student-athlete in high school and was inducted into the McDonogh School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. He was a two-sport Division I athlete (baseball and football) at Temple University where he earned his degree in Sport and Recreation Management. During his tenure at Temple, Mr. Poklemba earned multiple All-Big East Honors on the football field, was selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year in baseball, and was invited to serve as the first student representative on the Temple University Owl Club Board of Directors.
After a successful college athletic career, Mr. Poklemba was invited to workout with multiple NFL football teams. He played professional Arena Football for seven years. After winning a championship with the Harrisburg Stampede in 2014, he retired from his professional football career and proposed to Kristin Hill in front of five-thousand fans during his final game.
During Mr. Poklemba's tenure as Director of Athletics, Gerstell Academy was admitted into The Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and into The Interscholastic Association of Maryland (IAAM). Mr. Poklemba's played an integral role in leading this process.
One of the highlights in Mr. Poklemba’s career happened in 2014 when he started the first baseball team at Gerstell Academy. He continues to serve as the Head Varsity baseball coach today and has led his team to forty-five wins in their first five years as a members of the MIAA.
After thirteen years of helping to cultivate the leadership and values based athletic programs at Gerstell, Mr. Poklemba made the decision to step into a role where he could spend more time with his growing family. Mr. Poklemba lives in Hampstead with his wife Kristin and their children Cadence, Gavin, and Kensington.
