A Gerstell Model of Perseverance

Ms. Stephanie Joyner, Upper School Science teacher, is new to Gerstell Academy but not new to teaching. Colleagues describe her teaching style as dynamic; students find her positive, bubbly, always moving, entertaining, multi-talented, and generous with her time, talents and treasures. Ms. Joyner embodies Gerstell's leadership attribute Perseverance and is a role model for her students.
After graduating from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a certification in secondary science, Ms. Joyner began a teaching career in a Norfolk, Virginia public high school. She then moved to Seattle, Washington for six years where she taught, got married, and raised her two daughters, Astrid and Gwen. After taking time off to raise her children, Ms. Joyner returned to the classroom in 2006 and joined Gerstell in 2018.
To be part of Gerstell's supportive, affirming community of students, colleagues and families, Ms. Joyner feels grateful. "I am thankful to work in a place where so much good happens every day, a place where I can clearly see the inspiring leaders of tomorrow I know my students will become."
In her spare time, Ms. Joyner enjoys being with her daughters, reading, sewing, sketching, gardening, bee-keeping, long distance hiking, camping, and international travel. A trip to Morocco is planned during spring break to visit her daughter.
