From an early age, Ms. Rachel Newman knew teaching was her passion. While attending North Carroll High School, she participated in its education program. At Indiana University of Pennsylvania, she enrolled in its middle level education program and was a substitute teacher for Carroll County Public Schools.
During the summer, she managed a children's summer camp program at Four Seasons Sports Complex where she creatively invented new and exciting activities for campers. Her next position was as a sixth/seventh grade math teacher at New Windsor Middle School, and from there, onto Greenville, South Carolina, in the same capacity.
When she first toured the Gerstell campus, she knew after a few minutes it was to be the next step in her journey. "I couldn't have been more excited!"
Now in her second year here, Ms. Newman teaches Middle School mathematics and is a co-sponsor of the Middle School Math Club. She enjoys cheering on students as they participate in extracurricular activities. She believes students should appreciate the importance of mathematics in the real world, and presents them with numerous opportunities to apply everyday experiences to classroom learning.
"Learning should be fun, memorable and meaningful," she said. "Although math is an extremely important subject to comprehend, the more important message I convey to students is they have the opportunity to positively influence the world by spreading kindness." She reminds students: "You are kind, you are smart, and you are important."
