Todd's life has been one of steadfast dedication to our nation, to his family, and to the values of service, loyalty, and integrity that exemplify true leadership. Todd graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1984. Upon commissioning, he was selected to serve as a Nuclear Submariner-an honor reserved for those who demonstrate exceptional intellect, discipline, and commitment. Following graduation, he completed Nuclear Power School and the Submarine Officer's Basic Course, earned qualifications as a Nuclear Submariner and Engineer.
Todd began his naval career aboard the USS John Marshal (SSN-611), where he served until 1988. He was then selected to serve at Submarine Group 8 in Naples, Italy, from 1988 to 1991. During this time, Todd proudly served in support of U.S. operations during the Gulf War (Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm), contributing to the strategic submarine forces readiness and coordination in the Mediterranean theater.
Continuing his career, Todd served as Tactical Systems Officer aboard USS Kentucky (SSBN-737), Navigator aboard USS Tennessee (SSBN-734), and Navigator aboard US Greeneville (SSN-772), while also serving concurrently aboard USS Toledo (SSN-769) during her sea trials. His leadership, and technical expertise made him an invaluable member of every command he served.
Following a long and distinguished tenure at sea, Todd transitioned from active duty to continue serving his country as a civilian contractor and currently as a civil servant. In these capacities, he has supported the missions of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marine Corps, and most recently, the U.S. Army. His excellence and dedication have been recognized with four Civilian Service Commendation Awards, underscoring his continued impact and leadership across multiple branches of the armed forces.
Todd approaches every endeavor with loyalty, passion, conviction, and persistence. He has always believed that a life of service is the greatest and most impactful thing a person can do to help our country thrive a belief he has lived every single day, in and out of uniform.
Beyond his professional accomplishments Todd is most proud of his family! Todd and his wife Patty have raised three wonderful children; two of whom have followed his example of service. Their son, Nikolas was in the US Navy, and their daughter, Emma served in the US Coast Guard.
The family’s legacy of service began with Todd’s grandparents and late father, Capt. Thomas Lutton, US Coast Guard (Ret). Todd has kept the spirit of service alive with not only his service but the ongoing service of his children!
Todd embodies what it means to be a veteran-humble in his accomplishments, unwavering in his devotion, and tireless in his commitment to others. His life's work is a reflection of the Gerstell Academy principles of leadership, honor, and courage.
