COVID-19 Preparedness and Response

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Gerstell Academy is closely following the news and monitoring advice from President Trump, Governor Hogan, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Maryland Department of Health regarding social distancing, self-quarantines, and other measures designed to slow (and hopefully halt) the spread of COVID-19 virus outbreak. We encourage all Gerstell community members to carefully follow the advice of these experts.

Education Continuity Plan

Excerpt from the most recent communication from our President:

“COVID-19 has forced us to consider many new and different scenarios regarding our plans to re-open on-campus school in the fall. The safety of our Gerstell Academy community is our absolute top priority. Our Facilities team and entire staff are working together to prepare our campus for a return to operations on campus. In order to plan activities on campus, we have been in communication with the Maryland Department of Health for required plans and approvals and are continuously following recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Carroll County Health Department, and other state and national authorities.”

Lower School 2020-2021 Reopening Plan

We are delighted to begin the new school year with Lower School on-campus five days a week following safety guidelines and reinforcing healthy habits. Our Lower School academic and leadership programs best meet the developmental needs of our students in person. However, we understand that, due to a variety of situations including the need to self-isolate or quarantine at home, a few of our students may be unable to attend class on campus. To support these students in working to reach their full potential, virtual options will be available for such circumstances; details will be coordinated on a case-by-case basis.

Middle School 2020-2021 Reopening Plan

The Middle School will be offering the following instructional  models:

  1. On-campus instruction will be offered four days a week. All  Middle School students will participate in remote learning one day a week (Wednesdays) during full five-day weeks.
  2. A hybrid model will be offered to families that includes both on-campus instruction two days a week and remote learning classes three days a week.
  3. The third instructional model will allow students to participate in our remote learning program on a full-time basis, five days a week.

Upper School 2020-2021 Reopening Plan

The Upper School will offer two choices for students this fall. Students are grouped by grade level for both options. Details will be provided in an Upper School email early next week.

  1. Option 1 is a HYBRID model that allows students to attend in-person classes on campus and remote, synchronous classes.
  2. Option 2 is a REMOTE model that allows students to attend all classes through live, synchronous Zoom sessions.
