Upper School Students Build Connections and Leadership Through Opening Week Field Trips

The Ninth-Grade students traveled to Camp Puh'tok in Monkton, MD for a series of outdoor challenges, team-building activities, and leadership exercises. Set against the backdrop of the camp's natural surroundings, the experience encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones and develop trust in one another.

Students participated in activities that required problem-solving, collaboration, and effective communication. From group challenges to adventure-based activities, each experience emphasized the importance of leadership and collective responsibility. Students learned that leadership is not limited to those holding formal positions; rather, it can be demonstrated through encouragement, initiative, empathy, and a commitment to helping others succeed.

The senior class bonded over a class trip to Hershey Park where they enjoyed connecting with friends, faculty and classmates. The annual trip provided the class with an opportunity to enjoy the day before embarking on their final year together.

Upper School students ended the week with a meaningful visit to First Fruits Farm, where students and faculty worked side by side harvesting crops that help provide fresh food to individuals and families in need throughout the region. The experience gave students an opportunity to make an immediate impact while learning the value of service and stewardship.

Students and faculty teamed up to harvest collard greens, corn, chile peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes. They also packed 650 boxes of potatoes and 220 boxes of onions for distribution to food banks and ministries throughout the region. “All of this food that you harvest will go out tomorrow to people’s homes,” said Carissa Mortensen, Director of Programming. She said that the farm welcomes a community of over 150 people with disabilities and their support staff in order to teach them horticultural skills. Gerstell student leaders made the most of their time, kicking off the Labor Day weekend by working to reach their full potential in the service of others in need.
