The School Journey
In May 2016, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Drew University. There I played on the women’s basketball team. Although I had great success as a student-athlete, my favorite achievement was becoming the president of Drew Unified Sports Club; our objective was to pair athletes with and without intellectual disabilities with sports teams so they could learn tolerance. One of my biggest passions in life is to provide for individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunities to reach their full potential. Within the next two years, I plan to pursue a higher level degree in developmental or clinical psychology.
The Real World
After graduating from college, I worked for Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, with youth who had a variety of intellectual and developmental delays. I learned how to implement behavioral medication plans, how to de-escalate crisis situations, and a multitude of other relevant skills useful for working with developmentally disabled youth.
In May 2017, I began work for the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, which helps to build character and teach critical life lessons to at-risk youth through sports-themed programs. I assist with direct service events (clinics, camps, college days); oversee the implementation of youth development programs on-site at program partners; and support the development of new curriculum. I have had the amazing opportunity to travel outside the state of Maryland as our team helps to positively impact youth in their communities.
The Gerstell Impact
While I would like to thank the entire Gerstell community for providing me with the skills to develop into a successful young adult, I would like to thank personally Mrs. Beth Hand and Mrs. Heather Lapidario. The guidance I received from these teachers through high school has allowed me to successfully navigate through college and the work place with a high level of confidence in my abilities and in myself. The excellent framework Gerstell provided is something I will continue to hold onto throughout my career.
