Saluting Imari Owens '25 for Winning State Essay Competition

Three Baltimore-area students were honored as the top finalists in the 35th Annual "Champions of Courage" Black History Month essay competition. With over 1000 entries, the top three essayists were announced during a TV special which aired in late February entitled “Saluting Maryland’s Champions of Courage."

“Champions of Courage” is designed to commemorate Black History Month by celebrating positive role models for youth. The essay competition provides opportunity for students to participate in a scholastic competition, to gain confidence in their abilities, and to be recognized for their achievement. “Champions of Courage” also serves to share with one and all the legacy and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Congratulations to freshman Imari Owens who won first place in the contest and received a $200 scholarship award; a first for Gerstell Academy. In her honor, Gerstell Academy also received a $200 cash prize. Congratulations to Imari for winning the competition and approaching this endeavor with passion, conviction, and persistence.
