Jaxsyn Blackwell Wins Statewide Visual Arts Competition
Jaxsyn entered the contest last April while a student in Ms. Patty Lutton’s fourth-grade Spanish class. Under Ms. Lutton’s guidance, the class explored the theme “Why is learning another language important?” and created original artwork to express their ideas. Jaxsyn’s piece was selected, to represent Gerstell Academy in the statewide competition.
The contest invited elementary students across Maryland to submit visual interpretations of the theme. Entries were judged on:
Theme relevance
Visual impact
Neatness and spelling accuracy
Originality
Adherence to guidelines
Jaxsyn’s winning artwork featured a large key unlocking a door into a globe. Her creative approach earned her first place in the State of Maryland.
She titled the piece “Unlock the World Through Language” and is featured on the cover of the program.
Gerstell Academy congratulates Jaxsyn on her outstanding achievement and celebrates the creativity and global perspective fostered in our Spanish language program.
Gerstell Academy congratulates Jaxsyn, whose artwork, Unlock the World Through Language, is featured on the cover of the 2026 MFLA Fall Conference program!
