Learning on the Water: Fourth Grade Sets Sail on the Sigsbee

Throughout the trip, students took part in a series of hands-on investigations and experiences that brought their classroom studies of the Chesapeake Bay to life. They collected and tested water samples, examining factors such as salinity, turbidity, and temperature. They also explored biodegradation and discussed how pollution can affect the health of local ecosystems. 
One memorable moment came when students encountered debris floating in the water. Seeing pollution firsthand led to thoughtful conversations about how everyday choices can influence the environment and the importance of protecting our waterways. 
Students also had the opportunity to observe and identify organisms living in the Bay, including fish and crabs, while learning about the relationships between living things and their habitats. A runoff simulation helped them understand how water moves across different landscapes and how pollutants can eventually make their way into the Chesapeake Bay. 

Beyond the science investigations, students learned about navigation, helped steer the vessel, and worked together as crew members to raise the sail. These experiences required communication, teamwork, and problem-solving while giving students a unique perspective on the Bay. 

Fourth Grade Science Teacher, Ms. Heather Snider shared that collecting water samples, investigating pollution, and exploring the Bay firsthand gave students learning experiences that simply cannot be replicated in a classroom. 

Field trips like this allow students to connect classroom learning to the real world in meaningful ways. By the end of the day, fourth-grade students not only deepened their understanding of environmental science but also gained a greater appreciation for the Chesapeake Bay and the responsibility we all share in caring for it.
