Gerstell's Robotics Teams Rise to the Top of Local & State Championships

Gersetell Academy's Robotics Program is a unique, after-school club open to grades 1-12. We wish to thank the following coaches who are passionate about sharing their love of math and science with their students. These coaches have taught the students how to design, construct, and operate top performing robots: Ms. Meghan Jothen, Director of Instructional Technology, Mrs Kathy Krcma, Lower School Instructional Technology Teacher, Mrs. Joanna Edwards, Third Grade Leader, Mrs. Tracy Mummert, Pre-K Classroom Leader, and Mrs. Paula Dackermann, Kindergarten Lead Teacher.

Upper School Robotics - First Tech Challenge (FTC)
The Upper School Robotics Team, 6390 Falcons, competed at the Maryland FTC Qualifying Tournament at Oakland Mills High School earlier this month. The Falcons were part of the 1st Place Winning Alliance with South Carroll RoboCavs Gold and Almond Robotics. This Gerstell win advanced them to the Maryland State FTC Championships. Only 52 out of over 300 FTC teams qualify for the state championships.

Please join us on Sunday, March 1 at the Carroll County Agricultural Center to cheer on our Falcons Robotics Team 6390 as they compete at the Maryland FTC Championships. Free Admission. 10:30 am-3 pm The Falcons will compete in 5 qualifying matches!

Grades 4-8 - First Lego League (FLL)
This season our FIRST Lego League teams, the Wild Ones and 8 Bit Bosses competed at a Qualifying Tournament on Saturday, January 25th at Boys Latin. Both team were won an award. The Wild Ones won the Judges Award and the 8 Bit Bosses won 2nd Place Core Values. The 8 Bit Bosses were also chosen to move on to the FLL Championships on Sunday, February 23rd at UMBC Event Center. The 8 Bit Bosses had a strong showing earning their season’s highest total match score of 310, which placed the team about 43rd out of 80 teams at the Championships. Although the 8 Bit Bosses did not win an award, they scored very high on their project during the state competition. The team had built a prototype of their innovative ball storage unit with the help of a local carpenter and practiced their presentation many times. There are over 400 FLL teams in the State in the Maryland so to qualify for the State Championships is quite an accomplishment. We are very proud of both of FLL teams for a wonderful season full of engineering excitement!

Grades 1-3 - First Lego League, Jr. (FLL,Jr.)
Our youngest engineers, in first through third grades, represented the Gerstell Academy Robotics program at the FLL Jr. Expo at UMBC last Sunday. Gerstell's five teams presented their models and programming to a panel of judges. The judges posed questions to the team and our youngest Falcons answered with no assistance from the coaches. All five Falcon teams utilized their leadership skills and performed beautifully in front of the judges. The following awards were given to our youngest of Falcons:

  • Model Design Award to team FIRST Lego League Masters
  • Creative Model Award to team Lego City 3
  • Discover and Show Award to team Lego Builders 2000
  • Design and Show Award to team Lego Builders Junior
  • Creative Show Award to team Boom Builders
