Laura Robusto, Passionate about Helping Others

Ms. Laura Robusto, Upper School Math Instructor, is no stranger to the leadership values taught at Gerstell Academy. For the past three years, she has helped numerous Upper School students learn and understand mathematics, specifically Geometry and Algebra II. Although she enjoyed learning math in elementary school, her passion for mathematics started in her 8th grade Geometry class (where else?). Many of the projects and assignments she creates are inspired from her own mathematics experience. Laura then attended the Science and Mathematics Academy at Aberdeen High School, where she was able to connect her academic understanding to real-world STEM issues, as well as create and complete her Capstone Project research at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

Laura Robusto attended Virginia Wesleyan College (now University), where she studied mathematics and later minored in Biology, Computer Science, and Music. She held numerous leadership positions from a variety of clubs, honor societies, and organizations, including President of Math Club, Sigma Zeta Mathematics Honor Society, and the Virginia Wesleyan Choirs. Throughout her four years, Laura performed in the Wesleyan Singers, Virginia Wesleyan Chorale, Virginia Wesleyan Orchestra, and VWC Jazz Band, and in 2017 she was awarded the Outstanding Senior in Instrumental Music during her Senior Awards Ceremony.

Serving others has also been a passion for Ms. Robusto. She has been in the Girl Scouts since she was a first-year Daisy and earned her Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. This passion led Laura to take on a work study position through the Office of Community Service during her junior and senior year. As the Director of Marlins Count and Marlins Read, Laura oversaw over twenty volunteers who wanted to improve the math and reading/writing skills of elementary school children. These volunteers helped over fifty elementary school students in the Virginia Beach area and used their time and talents to give the students confidence in their abilities. This also included giving attention to the personal struggles that the students were facing in their daily lives. Being a part of this community outreach program opened up and blossomed Laura’s love for helping others, as well as the joy of teaching. As a thank you for her contributions to the children of Virginia Beach, Laura was awarded the 2017 Rotary Club of Town Center Virginia Beach Citizenship Award.

Because of these opportunities, Laura is thankful to work at Gerstell Academy. Being at Gerstell has deepened her love for helping students approach and understand mathematics, as well as given her an opportunity to act as a role model to future generations of students.
