Tyler Rieth Brings Wealth of Music Experience to Gerstell

This is Tyler Rieth’s first year as the Instrumental Music Director at Gerstell Academy. For almost 30 years, he has been involved in some way, shape, or form with music. Whether it be teaching, performing, composing, arranging or just enjoying, music has always been a major part of his life. Tyler has a degree in composition as well as music education, and was the youngest composition student to have a work premiered by the Cornerstone University Wind Ensemble. His musical works have been included in the repertoire of the University's touring ensembles, such recruitment tours, performance tours to five different states, and an international tour to Italy. After receiving his degrees in music, Tyler moved from Michigan to Maryland to accept a position teaching elementary music in Harford County. It was at that school that he met his wife (she was the art teacher).

Tyler Rieth quick facts:
  • Currently lives in Harford County with his wife and two children
  • Has worked as both a magician and clown
  • Has performed as a street magician in Germany and Italy
  • Has gone both skydiving and scuba diving
  • Photographs weddings and events in the summer and on weekends
  • Has performed at the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi and the Basilica of St Paul’s in Rome
A consummate performer, he has played piano and trumpet in numerous pit orchestras, was the keys player for a blues band, and is currently an accompanist for Young Person’s Summer Stock, a fine arts summer camp in Owings Mills. Tyler has taught music at various schools over the last decade, teaching hand bell choirs, musical theatre, photography, and the occasional fledgling band and choir, but has always had a desire to return to a band and strings program. Teaching instrumental music at a school where the concept of leadership and responsibility are held in such high regard has been a wonderful experience for him so far, as these are pivotal aspects of a successful instrumental program.
