Gerstell Academy Recognized as VFW Teachers of the Year

Without our veterans, America would not be the great nation it is today. Young people deserve to learn about our country's rich history, traditions and the role our veterans play in creating and shaping America.

Annually, the VFW Post 6918 awards a VFW Teacher of the Year to exceptional teachers for their outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism to students. Amy Morrow Funk, Head of Gerstell's Lower School, accepted the 2019 award on behalf of the Gerstell Academy community during a recent Leadership Circle. Ms Funk was honored to represent Gerstell Academy as a whole; "the culture of our community," she said, "is one of appreciation for our veterans, our current service men and women at home and abroad, and those who gave their lives in the defense of our country and its values."

In a letter to Dr. Sarah K. Lentz, a Gerstell parent, who presented the plaque, Ms. Funk cited several examples of how students and families coordinate events and projects that either serve or recognize veterans and current military. For example, Gerstell Academy was the host site for a 9,000 American flag tribute and display, signifying the 9,000 Maryland service men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country, as students sang patriotic songs for the audience. As well, each November, Gerstell coordinates a touching Veterans' Day ceremony where veterans in the community are invited on campus to be honored and those who have died, remembered.

"It is my privilege to work with a great number of professional educators," said Ms. Funk, "who truly earn and deserve a title of Teacher of the Year, year after year."
