Gerstell Academy’s Upper School Students visit First Fruits Farm
On Friday, August 30th, Gerstell Academy Upper School students and faculty traveled to First Fruits Farm in Freeland, Maryland to spend the day harvesting corn and potatoes to share with local food banks and homeless shelters. Community service is an integral part of the Gerstell mission, and students, faculty and staff participate in this annual service opportunity.
Gerstell upper school students spent the morning working together to harvest corn and potatoes. They picked over 50 tons of vegetables during their three hours in the field. The manual labor reminded students that they are fortunate to have the opportunity to attend Gerstell Academy and live in a world where food is plentiful. The day away from campus provided students time to contemplate the importance of giving back to the community, while making new friends and reconnecting with classmates.
Rick Bernstein, owner of First Fruits Farm welcomes student and faculty groups and appreciates their volunteer spirit. He began operating the farm because he believes that those who are less fortunate deserve to have fresh fruit and vegetables in their diet, and welcomes help from schools, churches, and community groups. The food also helps communities ravaged by natural disasters.
