Gerstell Academy Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year from September 15th- October 15th since 1989 as a way of expressing appreciation for the achievements, contributions, and culture that the Latinx community has had in the United States. It is celebrated during this timeframe because many Hispanic countries gained their independence within these 30 days between the years 1810-1821, including Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in the Middle School, students approached a virtual Nearpod field trip with passion in order to learn more about Portrait Leader, Cesar Chavez. The Spanish Department will continue to use this month to develop students’ cultural competence and think critically about the diversity of Latinx communities, as well as their own.
