Gerstell Academy Honors Second Annual Veteran of the Year
Gerstell Academy Honors
It is our honor to recognize our second annual “Gerstell Academy Veteran of the Year.” Members of our community are given the opportunity to nominate family members, friends, and community members who they believe are deserving of this recognition. A plaque will hang in Gerstell’s Alumni House commemorating the names of all winners.
The winner of this year’s Gerstell Academy Veteran of the Year served in the United States Navy from 1966 until 1972. He chose to enlist in the Navy at Fort McHenry Naval Base just as his oldest brother did 6 years previously. He said that President John Kennedy’s speech “ask not what your country can do for you but ask what you can do for your country” inspired him to serve his country. In high school he spent three years working in a grocery store, which introduced him to the food industry. He decided to join the Navy and pursue his interest in food service. His time in the Navy allowed him to serve around the world in the Caribbean, Brazil, Africa, Pakistan, India, and the Persian Gulf. He worked to reach his full potential aboard the Destroyer USS O’Hare named after Butch O’Hare. His time on the USS O’Hare demonstrated his passion, conviction, and persistence while doing a lot of painting, steering the ship, working in a gun mount, and getting sea sick in rough seas. Most of all he prepared the food and fed the sailors on the ship. Most important to him was the opportunity to serve others and his country.
The second year that Gerstell was open, this fine individual joined our Facilities and Maintenance team. He transitioned to driving a bus when we created our Transportation Department. He has been with Gerstell Academy for 15 years sharing his time, talents, and treasures, and instructing others, especially on Bike Day. This deserving recipient holds himself and others to the highest Gerstell standards with a smile on his face and a song in his heart.
It is an honor to announce that Gerstell Academy’s second annual Veteran of the Year is none other than our own bus driver and valued colleague Mr. Dwight Jones! Mr. Jones, please accept our appreciation and congratulations!
