Microsoft Surface Device Program Launches in Middle School

In the spring of 2020, Gerstell Academy’s Middle School forged a collaboration with Microsoft in regard to the school’s preexisting “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) policy. The power of the Microsoft Surface quickly became an integral part of this collaboration for the 2020-21 academic year, being piloted with our 5th and 6th grade as an educational tool. With the positive response to the Microsoft Surface pilot launch this fall, the Administration plans to transition the entire Middle School in the near future. “Having ongoing access to this technology has helped our students develop greater independence, increase engagement, and develop skills essential to thrive in the 21st century,” reports Mr. Ben Thompson, Assistant Head of the Middle School.
The student devices have been used to access resources, complete assignments, and for personal organization. Educational activities have included taking notes, researching information, producing documents, analyzing data, participating in surveys, producing videos, reading e-books, and various other educational tasks. The use of the Surface as an educational device provides our students and teachers with exciting possibilities for the classroom. A focus of this initiative is the responsible use of technology, known as digital citizenship. Our students are learning digital skills, ethics, etiquette, and online safety as important aspects of participating in today’s world as young leaders. The Middle School looks forward to the educational opportunities that our partnership with Microsoft will continue to bring our students and faculty.
