Gerstell Students Participate in 28th Annual Physics Olympics

Ten Gerstell Academy students participated in the 28th Annual Physics Olympics at Liberty High School last Saturday under the leadership of Mr. Butch Hilliard, Upper School Physics Instructor. The idea behind the Physics Olympics is to excite students about Physics and Science. This event attracts more than 250 local participants each year.

During this year's competition, Gerstell students were divided into three teams and competed in six different events against twenty-two schools fielding a total of thirty-five teams.

Some of the events consisted of protecting an egg from a 4 meter drop, launching a device in a controlled decent down a zip line, and building a bridge from spaghetti and note cards. “You learn things at school, and you don’t really understand how they apply to real life,” said Kate Maerten '21. “Then you come to a competition like this and you apply them, and it is just a lot of fun doing it.”

The competition was strong this year and the participants walked away with a feeling of accomplishment and pride. The students look forward to competing again next year.
