Three-Time MIAA Champions

Boys Lacrosse Program

Three championships in twelve seasons is not a bad way to start a program, and that is exactly what the Falcons have done. Fielding their first official varsity team in 2009-2010 and joining the prestigious Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) in 2011-2012, the Falcons would win their first of three MIAA Championships in 2012. They would follow that up with another championship in 2013, giving the Falcons back-to-back MIAA championships at the C conference level. Building off those banner seasons, the Falcons would move up to the B Conference in 2014, winning it in 2018 for the Falcons third MIAA Championship in the program’s first eight years.

Most recently, the Falcons have remained competitive in the MIAA, consistently making playoff appearances, and are poised to contend for championships annually. Despite being a young program at a young school, the Falcons have seen fifteen alumni move on to compete at the collegiate level.

Gerstell Academy is the only United States High School Boys’ Lacrosse program that has two Division I National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) players of the year on their coaching staff. Our long-time coach Milton Hilliard (Cornell University) is now joined by John Grant, Jr. (University of Delaware).

Go Falcons!

Meet The Coach

John Grant, Jr. will be taking over as the new Director of Lacrosse and Varsity boys Head Coach entering the 2022-2023 school year. Coach Grant comes to Gerstell Academy with over 20 years of coaching experience, most recently at the collegiate and professional level. He is excited to take the reins and develop our young men into leaders on and off the field.

Despite having coached at the collegiate level, with stops at the U.S. Air Force Academy and most recently Johns Hopkins University, and at the professional level coaching with the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse, Coach Grant states that he finds the most joy in coaching high school lacrosse. Prior to his collegiate coaching, Coach Grant spent time at Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado where they advanced to three 4A State Championships, winning back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017.

As a player, John Grant, Jr. has accomplished more than almost any lacrosse player in the history of the sport. He was named to the Hall of Fame for the Professional Lacrosse League (PLL-Field Lacrosse), National Lacrosse League (NLL-Indoor Lacrosse) and the University of Delaware. He is most notably the only player to be awarded the MVP in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and NLL in the same year. He has six MLL Championships, one NLL title and five Mann Cup crowns and four World Championship titles with Team Canada.
