Lower School - Pre-First Grade Social Studies
The function of the factual knowledge provided in our Social Studies program is to enable students to appreciate themselves, the world around them, and their role as responsible citizens of the United States.
They begin to develop an appreciation of historic and geographic factors and economic and political relationships that have shaped our world. We guide them with suggestions and opportunities for assuming a responsible role commensurate with their age and ability in their classroom and their school. We want to prepare students for their future and also help them function meaningfully and effectively in the present.
Thematic study allows for an understanding of how we relate to one another and to our environment, an exploration of social organization, and the recognition that science and the arts have developed from our basic needs.
Our program involves more than a passive acceptance of facts; it involves doing. Students become active participants by working with maps, charts, graphs, tables, and time lines as a vital part of the learning process. They read, create, cook, sing, construct, perform, interview, listen, report, and share.
