Upper School Curriculum

The upper school curriculum is designed to fulfill the Gerstell Academy Mission with an emphasis on the four areas of leadership education and skill development, college preparatory academics, physical training, and modern language fluency. Academic credit is awarded for the successful completion of each academic courses' requirements, or the equivalent of such. Credits are awarded based on the time and expectations of the course.

Graduation from Gerstell Academy requires the accumulation of a minimum of 26 academic credits. The Maryland State requirement for graduation is 21 credits. All Gerstell Academy students are expected to be enrolled in eight classes every year.

Upon enrollment, credits may be awarded for prior academic courses taken at an accredited or state-approved school or placement testing. Students may be tested for placement in specific courses such as Spanish and mathematics and may earn credit based on their placement testing. (Example: Students demonstrating proficiency in Algebra I through testing will earn one credit for Algebra I and will be placed in the next appropriate math class.)

"Gerstell Academy is the only leadership school in the area, and our children have benefited greatly by its values-based curriculum."

Leadership permeates all aspects of the curriculum. Students are encouraged to demonstrate their leadership in school, at home, and in the community.

"The admissions process at Gerstell Academy was a wonderfully welcoming experience. From the moment we entered the Robert E. Smith Hall, we knew that Gerstell was where we wanted our child to be."

"The challenging academics at Gerstell Academy taught our daughter to think critically and to be prepared to compete in an increasingly global society. We loved the Spanish fluency requirement."

Physical training encompasses both daily physical education opportunities and competitive athletics.

Gerstell Academy depends on the generous financial support of the entire Gerstell community. Please join us in the effort to make Gerstell greater!

Gerstell Alumni represent everything that is Gerstell. They are the ambassadors of the school that live the mission every day.

Gerstell Academy aspires and endeavors to remain a vibrant contributing member of our local communities.
