Gerstell Academy's Upper School Summer Reading Program

INTRODUCTION

We hope you are excited about beginning your Summer Reading Program!

You may review your summer reading selections by grade and subject two ways: by choosing from the link below for the Upper School Summer Reading List or by visiting the MBS Direct for Gerstell web site. You may purchase your books through MBS Direct or obtain them from your local bookstore, local library, or at our Gerstell Academy Library where some of the listed books are available for a two-week loan period.

The Upper School Summer reading program begins with a required reading task for the summer and is comprised of a wide array of genres and reading levels. The minimum summer reading requirement is to complete (a) the three required books and (b) one additional book from the resource list, for a total of four books. Please note that you may not choose a selection you have previously read for either summer reading or semester reading assignments.

The reading selection list is broken down by areas of leadership or virtues. Every student should be able to find books that are both enjoyable and will broaden their leadership horizons. Each student is required to complete a short reflection about each book read that will be submitted to their Advisor on or before the first day of classes. A direct link to this reflection document can be found below. Books from the list below are available in local libraries and most bookstores, with many available in paperback form.

Summer reading—a Gerstell Academy tradition—assures that the student does not lose the intellectual and leadership edge that has been worked so hard to hone during the academic year. The books that students must read and the format for reporting on that reading will be provided here by June 15, 2010.

The President's Summer Challenge is an optional, but highly recommended grade-specific effort that works to foster a practical application of Gerstell's Principles and Attributes that are reinforced throughout the academic year.
