Gerstell Academy's Middle School Summer Reading Program

INTRODUCTION

We hope you are excited about beginning your Summer Reading Program!

You may review your summer reading selections by grade and subject two ways: by choosing from the links below by grade or by visiting the MBS Direct for Gerstell website. You may purchase your books through MBS Direct or obtain them from your local bookstore, local library, or at our Gerstell Academy Middle School library where some of the listed books are available for a two-week loan period.

Over the summer, Gerstell Middle School students are required to read three books from the Middle School Summer Reading List as well as the Gerstell Academy Book of Knowledge.

Books on the lists for each grade are divided into the following four academic areas:

Group #1- Leadership and History
Group #2- Science and Math
Group #3- Art and Music
Group #4- Spanish and English

Students are to select their three books by choosing one book from each of three different groups. Middle School students who accept the Leadership Challenge should select one book
from all four of the academic areas.

For each book selected, students are required to complete the Summer Reading book report. Teachers in each of the academic areas will evaluate these forms and each student will receive
a summer reading grade for each book report they complete.

For example, a student who chooses a selection from the Spanish section of the list will have his or her book report evaluated by members of Gerstell's Spanish Department. This grade will be factored into the student’s first trimester grade in Spanish and will be weighed as a test or quiz grade at the discretion of the teacher.

When choosing books for summer reading, students are reminded to select books that they have not previously read and are encouraged to read additional books for extra-credit if they so desire.

Blank copies of the form for Middle School (MS) Summer Reading Book Reports are provided using the link below. Paper copies of the book report forms are also available in the Middle School office. Please complete one book report form for each book that you read.

The President's Summer Leadership Challenge is an optional, but highly recommended grade-specific effort that works to foster a practical application of Gerstell's Principles and Attributes that are reinforced throughout the academic year.

If you have any questions regarding the MS President's Leadership Challenge, please contact Dr. Fulton by email at lfulton@gerstell.org or by phone at 410.861.3000 x2149.
